A Message from Bishop Stan

In Mark 2:1-12 we read that after Jesus preaches, the crowd witnessed his curing of the paralytic man. The crowd was large. The man had to be lowered through a hole in the roof, made by four men who then settled him before Jesus. To this day, crowds gather in many parishes. And in their midst are surely those who harbor hopes for the miraculous. In this gospel, we also hear that Jesus forgave the sins of the paralytic - a man who would not have been there save for the generous labors of four men. Very few people experience the miracles of the forgiveness of sin and the kind generosity of friends and strangers. We may yet look for the extraordinary in life. But it is God who gathers a crowd and works miracles through them. We call it the Church.

It is for the Church that Jesus suffered and died. It is to the Church that we offer our time, talent, and treasure in acknowledging all that Jesus died for us. It is through the Church that this love, grace and forgiveness can be offered to those who are seeking these freeing gifts. But "through the Church" means through her members. It is we who offer these freeing gifts by bringing others closer to Christ. We do this in our daily witnessing. We do this through our natural gifts of caring and compassion. And we do this most lovingly by bringing others to our community of the Cathedral Parish.

Let us use this most solemn time of Great Lent to bring others on our personal journey. Let us allow those we know are seeking, even if they are our own family members, to witness our faith in community - our work in and around our Cathedral Parish. Let them see the results of our faith has brought us to in our lives. Our Lenten journey will be ever more fulfilling by allowing others to witness in their own lives the compassionate heart of Jesus.
